Renters' Rights Bill Faces Challenges in the Commons

The UK Government is pushing forward with significant housing reform, as Rt Hon Angela Rayner MP led the Second Reading of the Renters' Rights Bill. Less than a month after its introduction, the Bill has already stirred debate among MPs, who raised concerns about its potential impact on the rental market. Among the key issues were the decreasing supply of rental homes, delays in the justice system, and fears that the Bill could lead to rent increases. Rayner, however, was quick to dismiss these potential unintended consequences.

Rayner acknowledged the vital role landlords play in the housing sector, stating that the majority are responsible, provide good homes for tenants, and deserve recognition. She emphasised that, while the Bill builds on past reforms, it introduces new measures that go further in securing renters' rights, promoting social justice, and ensuring fairness for everyone involved.

    Rent Caps Rejected

In response to suggestions that rent caps be introduced, Rayner firmly rejected the idea. She argued that rent controls would limit the housing supply, ultimately doing more harm than good to the rental market.

Responsibilities include preventing mice and rats from entering the property and addressing an infestation that is a result of sub-standard living conditions.
